Sadly, in many countries throughout the world those who were suffering from disabilities become a liability to the nation. Poor medical facilities and low wages don’t afford a large number of countries in this world, too many countries in fact, the ability to be able to care for those with disabilities. This often means that these persons are left to fend for themselves, often finding their lives cut short early.
There were also countries where those with disabilities become outcasts solely because of their afflictions. The families hide or shun them, and society ignores them outright. They become the uncared for people.
Fortunately, in Laos they do not believe in neglecting those who require a little extra love and attention. In fact, in the city of Vientiane there is an amazing organization dedicated to assisting women with disabilities to be able to play an integral and important role in society. That organization is the Lao Disabled Women’s Development Centre.
Located near the Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge, this organization is open seven days a week, and invites visitors and tourists to come and see the incredible work that they are doing here. The Lao Disabled Women’s Development Centre works to enable disabled person to gain the knowledge and abilities to gain employment and to be able to care for themselves. The ultimate goal is for them to be able to sustain themselves within society.
The organization was first founded in 1990 as a means to help disabled women learn how to sell. They were taught such things as needlework and pattern making and before they knew it many found themselves marketable within the textile and garment industry. The vision of Madam Chanhpheng Sivila has enabled 30 women to be added to the program each year, and many have been able to leave and enter back into society free to care for themselves.
This is truly a revitalizing place to visit as you can see the great work that is being done to help these women learn and prosper. The Lao Disabled Women’s Development Centre is an amazing place that will show that no one is without value.
